Lenten Devotion

Day 14, Tuesday - February 19th, 2008

A Vessel

“Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ‘Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.’ Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’”  Isaiah 6:6-8

I am often amazed by the unknowns God uses for his grand work.  Isaiah was an unknown and had a speaking problem but God molded him into a major prophet that the Jews and the Christians consider important.  How could God use him instead of someone more powerful and important to world affairs?  Simple, Isaiah was willing to be a vessel for the will of God.  From that moment on, Isaiah went on to become a great prophet and God was able to do wondrous things and speak majestic words through the open heart of Isaiah.

This season of Lent is a season when we are to realign ourselves to the will of God and make recompense of our sinful ways but we ought to, also, realign ourselves with God’s vision.  We ought to take this season to also allow our vision to match that of God’s.  We should open our hearts and minds and souls to the potential that God has for us and employ that potential for the re-creation of the world.

God is doing a new thing here on earth but He does so with each of us one moment at a time.  However, he can only do so, if we are open and are aligned to his will and panoramic vision.

Prayer: “Dear God of creation and life, guide us to seek out your will and your wisdom so that we may walk according to your will and be used by you according to your pleasure.  Amen.”
