Day 35 - Tuesday - March 11, 2008

The Presence of God
“Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications!” Psalm 130:1-2

The writer of this psalm was obviously in major need of being heard.  He was going through a terrible crisis and wondered where his relationship with God was at that very moment.

This psalm is one of those psalms where the reader can actually feel the pain of the writer, the agony and the despair coming through the words.  It is in these dramatic feelings of helplessness and desperation that gives this psalm so much power and force.

We can all identify with the writer of this psalm to a large degree.  We have been in situations where we cry out with desperation and despair for the comforting presence of our Lord.  Sometime, our situation is so bleak we even question the presence of God and if our faith is legitimate at all.  However, as we conclude reading the psalm, we learn that the writer’s faith in God has not been lost but has gotten stronger as he learned of the power of faith in God and the presence of the Lord.

We, as the reader, learn one great thing from this psalm; we learn that God is the might force that redeems us from all hopelessness and all depth of despair.   What a gift we have in God and what an awesome power we hold to know that God is our redeemer, our strength and our friend in any situation we may find ourselves in.

Prayer:  Loving God, sustain us with your Spirit and take not your presence from us. Amen.
